Radiant All Year Round: Cosmetics Essentials For Every Season

Much like every season calls for a certain type of footwear, so does your skin and hair. At Selfnamed, we believe that each season brings its own unique charm, and your skincare routine should reflect the ever-changing tapestry of nature.

To help you navigate the cosmetic carousel, I’ve prepared this guide, unveiling the perfect beauty essentials tailored to every season. Regardless if you’re using them yourself or running a skincare business, and wondering when certain products should be actively marketed. Whether it’s the summer’s heat, the crisp air of fall, frosty winter nights, or the blossoming spring – we’ve got you covered.

Join me on an expedition to explore a year-round glow that will put you and your customers in perfect harmony with the natural rhythm of the seasons.

Quick disclaimer, before we dive in – you need to have a good idea of your skin and hair type, how they react to different weather conditions throughout the year. Be mindful of how your skin and hair change in different circumstances, and adjust or switch products accordingly.

Winter Wonderland Glam

This shouldn’t come as a surprise that during the colder seasons, you need to choose products that are more nourishing. Your skin might actually be begging for it.

This means that foaming or salicylic acid-based cleansers, which can be more drying, should be switched for cleansing creams, balms, and oils, which will keep your skin hydrated and keep the moisture locked in.

While it’s tempting to take a long, hot shower or bath in the cold winter nights, this should be avoided. Long contact with hot water can strip your skin of its natural moisture, leaving it even dryer. After showering or having a bath, make sure to use a moisturising body cream or oil. Don’t be afraid to use larger amounts than in summer months.

How to layer your winter skincare:

  1. Gentle Cleansing Milk (unless you have oily skin type)

  2. Hydrating Toner (to add extra moisture to the skin)

  3. Hydrating Serum (to give skin hydration in the deepest layers)

  4. Moisturising Day Cream or Nourishing Rich Cream (to keep the moisture locked in)

  5. All-In-One Facial Oil or Nourishing Facial Oil (for extra nourishment during the day or night)

  6. Eye Cream

  7. SPF

Yes, don’t forget your SPF, especially, when enjoying winter sports in the mountains!

If the weather where you live is anywhere like it’s in Latvia, Selfnamed home, during winter, with just a few sunny days per whole season, it’s easy to think there’s no need for sunscreen. But the sun keeps on burning no matter the season, meaning that UV rays are affecting your skin cells in the dead of winter. So, yes, again – SPF!

As for your hair, in cold weather, most people need to switch from deeply cleansing shampoos and conditioners to moisturising ones. Why? Because during winter, hair loses moisture, making it more dry and brittle, which can lead to hair breakage, split ends, and quite simply – a rather dull appearance in general. In addition, moisturising hair care in winter will also help reduce frizziness.

Finally, if there’s one important takeaway from all of this, it’s to moisturise, moisturise, and moisturise.

Spring Blossoms

After months of darkness, cold and freezing weather, it’s finally time to enjoy the fresh air and welcome the light. With changes all around us in nature, it’s understandable that most of us also want to make changes in our daily skincare routine, but I would advise taking things slow.

Your skin needs some time to adjust to the weather changes, and since spring in most places carries a lot of humidity and higher temperatures, there should only be slight tweaks in your daily routine. Such as choosing gentler products, increasing the usage of SPF and anti-ageing regimen.

I know that rich moisturisers feel like a godsend on dry skin, but in more humid and warmer season, so-called heavy moisturisers will cause your skin to look and feel sticky and sweaty. Unless that’s the look you’re going for, lighter, gel-based moisturisers are recommended.

While in the first months of spring you can still use the same SPF as in winter, closer to summer I’d advise increasing your sun protection to 50+.

How to layer your spring skincare:

  1. Purifying Mousse or Gentle Cleansing Foam

  2. Hydrating Toner

  3. Vitamin C Serum or Niacinamide Gel Moisturiser (if unwanted pigmentation spots appear with the first sunbeams or if you simply need extra vitamin boost)

  4. Light Moisturising Day Cream or Moisturising Day Cream (to maintain the moisture levels)

  5. Caffeine Gel Booster (whenever your eyes feel like they need extra refreshment after long winter)

  6. SPF

In addition, spring is a great time to get rid of the dead skin cells by using AHA Peeling Concentrate, and to give skin extra protection from free radicals by using Antioxidant Gel Booster. But don’t forget to use SPF afterwards!

When it comes to hair, with increased temperatures, your scalp can become sweatier, making your hair grease quicker. Many rushes to solve this issue with dry shampoo, but I recommend applying the appropriate scalp treatment.

Lucky for you, Selfnamed is about to introduce brand-new products, like, Sensitive Scalp Shampoo, Scalp Oil and Scalp Scrub.

Summer Radiance

Lying on the beach on a sunny summer’s day sure feels nice, but, like all things that feel good, one needs to be careful about how much your skin is exposed to the sun. During summer, the UV radiation is at its highest, so you should never leave your house with an adequate SPF layer on your skin.

Similarly to spring skincare routine, don’t be afraid to use anti-ageing products, products with high concentration of antioxidants and hydrating products. Just like you need to drink more water in the summer’s heat, so does your skin and hair.

Furthermore, with your body producing more sweat, which can cause acne breakouts and greasy skin, it’s important to exfoliate and cleanse your skin more frequently.

How to layer your summer skincare:

  1. Clarifying Gel or Micellar Cleansing Water

  2. Purifying Toner (if your skin gets more oily, this formula will be great to prevent acne and breakouts)

  3. Double Hydration Boost Gel (to hydrate, hydrate, and again hydrate)

  4. Acne Spot Care (to manage unwanted redness around the blemishes)

  5. Anti-Ageing Day Cream (great to help skin renew) or Oil-Free Hydrating Gel (great after sunbathing)

  6. Caffeine Gel Booster (whenever your eyes feel like they need extra refreshment after festival season or late summer nights)

  7. SPF, SPF, SPF!

Majority of people, especially women, tend to shave more frequently during summer season. Often, this can cause skin irritation, dryness, and even ingrown hair. To avoid this, keep your skin hydrated after shaving with hydrating body lotions and moisturisers.

Of course, if this doesn’t seem to help your skin, then you might consider trying waxing or laser hair removal. But even then, consult with your beauty specialist or dermatologist about the body care regimen that would suit your skin and hair needs.

Fall Elegance

Let’s be honest – if you’re anything like me and love spending time outdoors, most likely you’ve managed to damage your skin on some extent during summer. (Yes, even though you moisturised, hydrated and bathed in SPF.) But it’s not the end of the world.

If you’re experiencing bad breakouts from constant sweat or sunscreen application, or pigmentation and spotty skin due to too much sun exposure, try peeling or retinoid infused products. This will help get the damaged top layer of your skin off and give way for your skin cells to regenerate.

Include vitamin serums in your daily routine, but also take advantage of the harvest season to boost your immune system by eating veggies. Did you know, that squash, for example, is packed with carotenoids – a compound that has been proven to give your skin a healthy glow? I bet that squash cream soup doesn’t sound that bad anymore, right.

And while you’re enjoying squash and other veg for dinner, you can introduce the All-In-One Facial Oil in your daily skincare routine, as it will help restore and prolong the summer glow.

During fall, your daily skincare routine should gradually transition from products with majorly hydrating components to products that are richer in moisturising. Your hair care regimen should also gradually move towards winter selection.

How to layer your fall skincare:

  1. Purifying Mousse or Gentle Cleansing Foam

  2. Hydrating Toner

  3. Botox-Like Peptide Serum (helps to renew and protect skin)

  4. Retinol-Alternative Oil Serum (to boost skin regeneration – this should be used during the night)

  5. Anti-Ageing Day Cream (to keep the skin on the renewal track)

  6. Smoothing Eye Cream (don’t forget about the most delicate skin area)

  7. SPF (especially important if you are using retinoid infused products)

With heavy rainfall, wind and colder temperatures, remember to protect your hands – wear gloves and apply protecting hand cream. In my experience, people often forget to take care of their hands, which can lead to dryness, itchiness, and even rashes. That’s because the palms of your hands don’t have sebaceous glands, which means they need extra help from us to keep the skin moisturised and healthy.

Alas, you can try switching to a different body wash, so its fragrance would uplift the senses when the weather gets colder and the days shorter.

To summarize, you can sell any product at any time of the year. There are plenty of evergreen products that are in high demand regardless of the weather. But, based on your customer base location, you should be aware that consumption of specific products in specific seasons change dynamically. For example, if your sales are focused on the USA and Europe markets, you'd be better off pushing SPF in March, when the sun starts to shine more frequently in the Northern Hemisphere. In other words, you really need to know your market and what your customers are looking for in different periods of the year.

And, finally, don’t forget to take care of yourself! Because nothing looks better in your fifties, than correctly applied skincare and hair care routine in your twenties.
