Women's Day: 7 Ideas How To Boost Your Sales

Seasonal campaigns are a great opportunity to target and engage your customers when they are in the seasonal buying mode. With the winter gloom heading towards the end and spring already so close, there are several occasions coming into the spotlight that usually are accompanied by specific buying behaviours. One such occasion right at the beginning of March is International Women's Day.

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

This year, the International Women's Day 2024 campaign theme is “Inspire Inclusion”.

When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. So, collectively, let’s forge a more inclusive world for women.

In the world of eCommerce, an occasion of this amplitude is a great opportunity for brands and business owners to get on board with a cause that is recognized globally and boost their sales and brand awareness.

The most popular Women's Day gifts are flowers, jewellery, perfume, candles, chocolates, plush toys, accessories, skincare products, make-up, fashion accessories and many others. Keeping that and the theme of this year's Women's Day in mind, here are 7 marketing ideas to help you boost your sales.

1. Use Inspiring Messaging

As you're planning your marketing strategy for this occasion, think about what would be the preferred platform to use to share your message. You have multiple options here:

  • Email chain: you can send out a special message / newsletter via email to your customers.

  • Website or blog: you can place a temporary message in the form of a banner on your website or create a blog article dedicated to Women's Day.

  • Social media: you can use social media channels to talk about Women's Day and share inspirational stories with your followers.

You can, of course, also combine all of these platforms to increase your reach.

Once you have decided on the platform, think carefully about the target audience: their gender, age, location, status, habits, etc.

For example, if your usual customer base are women who love to work out, then you might choose a message that promotes self-care or inspires you to live boldly and chase your dreams. If, on the other hand, you're selling products to men in barbershops, your message could include gift ideas for women or stories about equality and inclusion.

This is a great (and low-cost) way of getting your brand associated with the movement and the occasion. Sharing inspirational stories or experiences can help you drive more traffic, as we tend to make commercial decisions based on an emotional response.

2. Custom Packaging & Gift Notes

Whether people want to admit it or not, first impressions matter. A lot. And you'll never get a chance to make a great first impression. So, when it comes to your customers, you want them to undoubtedly have a great first impression. Which means, packaging matters.

Custom packaging is usually tailored around a brand's specific needs and includes modifying the package's shape, size, style, colours, materials, or other specifications. It's an incredible way to not only impress your customers, but to leave a long-lasting impact on your brand that leads to increased word of mouth, social sharing, brand loyalty and revenue.

In the world of dropshipping, it's not always possible to offer customised packaging, especially if your products are shipped directly to your customers by your fulfilment partners. However, if you're re-packaging and shipping your products yourself, or sell them in a physical store, you should really take advantage of custom packaging.

It's not necessary to spend money on printing custom boxes or shopping bags, a simple alternative includes custom sticker with your brand or a ribbon that's neatly tied around the package. In other words – put some effort and thought into the way you package your items, and perhaps include a little handwritten “Thank You” note.

A customised package is not just a marketing tool, but also an experience. Make sure your customers experience, how much you care for them. (And while you're at it, why not film the process and share it with your customers similarly to this?)

3. Coupons

Coupons are a great way to generate revenue by driving new customers to your store, as well as boosting the engagement of your existing customers. It's estimated that 60% of consumers are likely to try a new product as a result of a coupon, while 46% would change their planned purchase.

If you're using apps like Shopify or WooCommerce to sell your products, creating a coupon campaign is pretty easy and doable directly on their apps. Once a coupon is created, you can share it either in a newsletter with your existing customers, a social media post or offer it to new customers, who stumble upon your store for the first time.

Keep in mind, that using coupons cost business money and can lead to slightly lower profit for particular sales. You don't want to give out too many coupon codes, as that can cause more damage than good. Still, it's a solid marketing strategy and definitely worth a try.

4. Flash Sales

For people who are just browsing your store, but not buying, you can use an automated pop-up offering them a discount if they buy a product within, for example, half an hour. Or you can offer your customers to buy an item within a specific day (like, Women's Day) and get free shipping. These are known as flash sales that offer a discount for a very limited time.

Flash sales are proven methods of improving sales, and if you're selling on a platform like Shopify or WooCommerce, then they can be easy to set up and fully automated.

5. Giveaway

Promotional giveaways are a great way to keep your customers excited and engaged. It's also a sure-fire way to boost your store or site visits and grow your audience.

In general, people tend to buy things from brands they recognize. Giveaways help people identify your brand and remember it, which can stop them from turning to competitors. Not just that – it's yet another form of “word of mouth” marketing, because many giveaways usually offer giving you and your friend a free product. These winners are later on more inclined to continue following your brand and talk about it with other people, as they have had a great experience.

6. Games

There's this thing in marketing called “gamification”, which is a strategy that uses game mechanics in a non-gaming context to boost conversion rates. It's one of the most widely used strategies in the digital marketing industry. Think games like “Scratch and Win”, “Spin The Wheel”, trivia, quests, treasure hunts, puzzles etc.

Among the benefits of gamification are engaging audiences, fostering brand loyalty, and driving consumer participation. By incorporating game elements, such as rewards, challenges and competitions, businesses tap into the fundamental human desire for achievement, recognition, and entertainment. Games provide not just a dynamic and interactive experience, but also makes the marketing messages more memorable and enjoyable.

If you're short of ideas and resources on how to market your skincare products for Women's Day, here's an idea that won't cost you any money to set it up and will be just as fun.

Place multiple different objects on your desk, and among all of them place one of your products. Make sure it's not obvious to spot it. Then take a picture of your desk and post it on your social media channels, like, Instagram Story. Ask your followers to find the specific product and reward the winner with either a discount coupon, free shipping for their next order or giveaway the product itself.

7. Gift Sets

If possible, create bundles of products, and market them as gifts for women. For example, you can put a few hair care products and sell them as a bundle. Remember, that there's always a part of your shop visitors (regardless, if it's online or in-person), who don't know what they are looking for yet. They have stumbled upon your products by almost an accident, hoping to find a gift. So why not make it extra easy for these people and offer just that — a gift.

The major benefits of offering gift sets are the possibility to slightly increase the profit margin, especially if you can package it as a gift as well. And the ability for customers to try out more than one of your products. Essentially, this increases your brand awareness and possibility that recipients of the gift sets will come to your store looking for more.

These are just some marketing ideas that you can take advantage of this Women's Day (and any other occasion for that matter). We recommend trying out different tactics over time to see which one works best for your target audience and brings the most value.

Be brave, have fun, and let us know which of these marketing ideas you end up trying and how it went!
